Hillary, Backus, Catron earn Big South honors for CCU

After defeating Furman in a thrilling triple overtime contest this past Saturday, the Big South Conference has named Coastal Carolina quarterback Aramis Hillary the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina linebacker Quinn Backus has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week. Coastal Carolina kicker Alex Catron and Liberty’s Kevin Fogg shared Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

This marks the second consecutive week a Coastal player has been named the conference defensive Player of the Week as senior Dontavais Johnson earned the distinction, as well as National Defensive Player of the Week, in week one. This marks the ninth time Coastal has taken three of the league’s four weekly honors and first since Zach MacDowall, Derrick Frazier and Justin Durham were the league’s offensive, defensive and special teams honorees in a 20-6 win over VMI in Oct. of 2009.

Hillary threw for a career-high 292 yards, while tying a career-high with 20 completions. He began the game completing each of his first eight passes as Coastal took a 10-0 lead, including a one-yard touchdown run by the senior. In the second half and overtime, Hillary completed 9-of-12 passes, including each of his last five. He completed two 20-yard gains on Coastal’s final drive to setup the game-tying field goal. In the overtime period, he was 3-for-3, including completions of 35, 25 and 26 yards, with two touchdown passes. This marks the second time Hillary has been named the Big South Offensive Player of the Week, matching the feat in last year’s season-opening win versus Furman.

Backus led Coastal with 11 tackles and two pass breakups, adding a tackle for loss and recovering a fumble.  Backus was particularly active in the first half, collecting seven tackles as Furman was held to just 103 yards of total offense and six points. In the third quarter, Backus recovered a fumble on Coastal’s first punt. Six plays later, Coastal scored a touchdown to go up 17-6.

Catron, playing on a sloppy field due to two rain downpours, scored 13 points, making all four of his extra points – including two in overtime – and connecting on 3-of-4 field goals. With 4:12 left in the game, Catron hit a 35-yard field goal, putting Coastal up 22-12. Then, as time expired in regulation, he made a career-long 45-yard field goal, which ties for fourth in CCU history.
