Hoops: CF girls win in OT; MB claims sweep over MC

The Carolina Forest girls basketball team battled its way to a hard-fought 52-49 overtime victory over visiting Sumter on Friday night to capture sole possession of first place in Region 6-5A midway through the league schedule.

The Lady Panthers (13-4 overall, 5-0 region) stayed alive on a game-tying 3-pointer by Ellen Nardella at the regulation buzzer to force an extra period. In overtime, Cheyenne Pyles-Moultrie’s defensive play forced steals and turnovers, allowing The Panthers to pull out the win.

Alexis Tomlin led the team in scoring with 22 points, Pyles-Moultrie added 17 points. Nardella had 9 on three 3-pointers, and Gabby Giracello hit a big 3 late.

The Panthers host South Florence on Tuesday.

* Myrtle Beach 58, Marlboro County 27: The Lady Seahawks (14-3, 3-0) got a pair of double-doubles from Janell Horton (18 points and 10 rebounds) and Asia Smith (12 points and 14 rebounds) to beat the Lady Bulldogs and remain in first place of Region 7-4A.

Myrtle Beach’s Ivy Collins scored 12 poin ts, Jalah Horton 8pts, Ajia Kelly 6pts, and Makalya Morgan 2pt. Record 14-3 and Region 3-0.

* Conway 69, West Florence 35: The Lady Tigers used a stifling first-half defense and an explosive 22-point third quarter to defeat the Lady Knights.

Conway’s Neci Hemingway posted an impressive double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Lenaejah Evans scored 15 points and Meme Williams tallied 17 to lead the Lady Tigers to a big region win.

Boys

* Christian Academy of MB 92, The King’s Academy 47: The Saints scored their second easy win of the week in region play.

One game after becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer, Michael Green has another big game with 28 points. Davis Guyton added 21.

* Socastee 64, South Florence 62: The Braves faced a back-and-fourth battle with the Bruins before pulling out a two-point win.

Socastee’s Kendrell Generette erupted for 20 points, Jay Williams added 15 and Alex Collins tallied 10.

* Myrtle Beach 62, Marlboro County 38: The Seahawks blasted the Bulldogs behind senior guard Robert Swanson’s 23 points.

Emorie Knox chipped 13 points and Louigi Piccione came of the bench to add 10.

* Conway 69, West Florence 38: The Tigers remained undefeated in Region 6-5A play with an easy win over the Knights.

* Wilson 70, St. James 24: The Sharks suffered a tough loss to the top-ranked Tigers.
