Hoops: Chiefs, Tigers use last-second shots for wins

North Myrtle Beach High’s Cooper Chandler picked the right time to find the hot hand in the Chiefs’ 53-50 victory over region foe Marlboro County on Friday.

Coming off a team-high 18 point performance in Wednesday’s Region 7-4A opening win over St. James, Chandler was limited to only 2 points until the final seconds against the Bulldogs. Chandler made a steal and hit the game-winning 3-pointer from beyond midcourt at the buzzer to help the Chiefs get off to a 2-0 start in region play.

North Myrtle Beach was led by Tyron Stockdale with 14 points. QuanDaveon McCollough led the Bulldogs with a game-high 17 points.

* Conway 44, Carolina Forest 42: Jaylen Moody’s layup in the final second allowed the Tigers to escape an upset bid by the host Panthers.

The Panthers jumped out to a big lead early before the Tigers finally able to take a lead midway through the fourth quarter. With the game knotted at 42-all, Conway ran the clock down and found Moody inside for the game-winner.

Carolina Forest was led by Kyle Watkins with 13 points, Derek Alston with 11, and T-Jay Brunson with 10.

The Panthers look to earn their first region win with games on back to back nights Tuesday at Socastee and Wednesday at West Florence.

* Myrtle Beach 68, St. James 52: Despite a last-minute change of venue due to a leaky roof in the Myrtle Beach High gym, the Seahawks cruised to victory over the host Sharks.

* Sumter 86, Socastee 54: The Braves suffered their first region loss on the road against the Gamecocks.

Socastee was led by Kendrell Generette with 14 points, Andrew Gardner with 13, and Jay Williams with 11.

* Christian Academy of MB 87, Dillon Christian 50: The Saints returned to action with an impressive region win over Dillon Christian.

Mike Green scored 23 points, Davis Guyton tallied 20 points, and Sam Woods posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Saints’ victory.

Girls

* North Myrtle Beach 66, Marlboro County 33: The Lady Chiefs (13-1 overall, 2-0 region) won their 13th consecutive game by doubling up the Lady Bulldogs.

Jordan Berger single-handedly matched Marlboro County’s offensive output with a career-high 33 points. Sister Jenna Berger and freshman Daveon Hatchell added 10 points apiece.

* Myrtle Beach 52, St. James 18: The Lady Seahawks rolled past the Sharks to improve to 2-0 in region play.

Myrtle Beach was led by Janell Horton with 16 points and Ivy Collins with 14.

* Carolina Forest 41, Conway 36: The Lady Panthers used a strong team defense to stifle Conway’s guard play and escape the road rivalry with a victory.

Carolina Forest got a pair of double-double performances from Alexis Tomlin (27 points, 16 rebounds) and Ellen Nardella (10 points, 11 rebounds) to take down the Lady Tigers.
