Hoops: Chiefs, Tigers use last-second shots for wins

North Myrtle Beach High’s Cooper Chandler picked the right time to find the hot hand in the Chiefs’ 53-50 victory over region foe Marlboro County on Friday.

Coming off a team-high 18 point performance in Wednesday’s Region 7-4A opening win over St. James, Chandler was limited to only 2 points until the final seconds against the Bulldogs. Chandler made a steal and hit the game-winning 3-pointer from beyond midcourt at the buzzer to help the Chiefs get off to a 2-0 start in region play.

North Myrtle Beach was led by Tyron Stockdale with 14 points. QuanDaveon McCollough led the Bulldogs with a game-high 17 points.

* Conway 44, Carolina Forest 42: Jaylen Moody’s layup in the final second allowed the Tigers to escape an upset bid by the host Panthers.

The Panthers jumped out to a big lead early before the Tigers finally able to take a lead midway through the fourth quarter. With the game knotted at 42-all, Conway ran the clock down and found Moody inside for the game-winner.

Carolina Forest was led by Kyle Watkins with 13 points, Derek Alston with 11, and T-Jay Brunson with 10.

The Panthers look to earn their first region win with games on back to back nights Tuesday at Socastee and Wednesday at West Florence.

* Myrtle Beach 68, St. James 52: Despite a last-minute change of venue due to a leaky roof in the Myrtle Beach High gym, the Seahawks cruised to victory over the host Sharks.

Socastee was led by Kendrell Generette with 14 points, Andrew Gardner with 13, and Jay Williams with 11.
