Hoops: Tigers top Chiefs; Braves avoid Shark scare

nmbhoops-5layupSocastee didn’t need overtime to defeat rival St. James in Friday’s rematch, but the Braves did have to hold off a hard charge to escape with a 57-45 victory at the Shark Tank.

Despite building a double-digit halftime lead at 29-14, the Braves (4-2) withstood a strong second-half surge by the Sharks that closed the deficit to six points in the final frame. Led by 7-footer Jason Cudd’s game-high 20 points, the Braves withstood the run.

The Sharks (2-3) were led by senior Cameron Williams with 17 points and junior Mabry Godbold with 14 points. Freshman Payton Lewis added seven points four assists, and senior Trey Myers was held to two points but pulled down eight rebounds.

The Sharks host Georgetown on Tuesday night, while Socastee travels to North Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.

* Conway 85, North Myrtle Beach 57: After both teams saw their stellar football seasons come to an end last week, it was finally time for the basketball teams’ to take center stage.

The Tigers (3-1) notched a big road win at North Myrtle Beach, as both teams were finally at full strength with late-arriving football players joining their rosters. The Tigers proved too much for the Chiefs (1-3), pulling away in the second half for an easy win.

North Myrtle Beach travels to West Brunswick (NC) on Monday, while Conway pays a visit to Myrtle Beach on Tuesday.

* Trinity-Byrnes 66, Christian Academy 63 (OT): The Saints (4-7) suffered their third straight loss with a tough overtime loss at home.
