Hot-shooting Chattanooga chews up Coastal defense

ccuhoops-chattCoastal Carolina ran into a red-hot Chattanooga basketball team, and the experienced Mocs came into Conway and defeated the Chanticleers 68-52.

The Mocs (5-2) shot the ball well and finished hitting 46 percent of their shots with Tre’ McLean leading the way with a game-high 26 points.  Only one other Moc player reached double digits and that was Makinde London with 11.

Chattanooga has all five starters back from last season’s 29-win season and has already defeated Tennessee this season.  Nine different players scored for UTC in a balanced-scoring effort.

Jaylen Shaw led the Chants with 12 points and Elijah Wilson added 11.

Coastal (2-5) did not shoot the ball very well and finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field.  They only hit three of their 16 three point attempts and were nine of 14 at the free throw line.

CCU did out rebound the visitors 36-35 with Demario Beck’s nine boards leading the way.

Colton Ray-St Cyr had three assists and Jaylan Robertson came off the bench to record two steals for the Chants defense.

Chattanooga started the game knocking down five of its first seven shots and never let up on its way to a 41-23 halftime lead.

McLean did most of the damage scoring 19 points on seven of 12 shooting, including hitting four of five from beyond the three point line.

The Mocs finished the first half shooting 53.3 percent from the field and also eight of 15 of its threes for another 53.3 percent.

Shaw had 10 first half points to lead the Chanticleers on four of seven shooting.  CCU shot 42 percent in the first half, but 11 turnovers hurt their chances for more scoring opportunities.

The Chanticleers will not have a lot of time to rest as Methodist University rolls into Conway tomorrow (Wednesday) for an 8:30 p.m. match up.  The game is the second game of a double-header as the women will host Catawba College before the men’s game.
