Johnson caps breakthrough season with top Tour award

golf-djCoastal Carolina University alumnus Dustin Johnson claimed golf’s biggest prize Tuesday when he was named the 2016 PGA Tour Player of the Year.

In a breakthrough season that saw Johnson capture a career-best three wins, he earned the Jack Nicklaus Trophy over Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Henrik Stenson. The award was voted on by his peers on the PGA Tour.

“I don’t even know if I ever even dreamed that this would be happening, but obviously it was a great season,” Johnson said. “I worked really hard on all parts of my game this whole year, and I’m going to continue to do that, you know, and just very blessed to be receiving all these awards. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to receive these.”

Johnson won the U.S Open and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and posted a record-breaking performance at the BMW Championship. The 32-year-old has notched at least one PGA Tour victory in nine consecutive seasons, marking the longest active streak on the tour.

Johnson also ended up second at the RBC Canadian Open, notched third-place finishes at the Houston Open and the Memorial Tournament and secured a Tour-best 15 top-10 finishes.
