Kovac wins duathlon to wrap up MB Triathlon Club series

The Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club wrapped up the 2012 season with a duathlon along the Grande Dunes section of Myrtle Beach this morning.

The run/bike/run duathlon featured a 1.5 mile run, followed by a 12 mile bike portion, and another 1.5 mile run to complete the cycle.

With an air temperature of 43 degrees, strategy really played a part in the competition. “Many of our competitors haven’t ever raced in conditions like that,” said event organizer Pete Politis. “Nobody takes off quick from the line; they go out together and then try to chase each other down on the bike.”

Michal Kovac crossed the line first with a time of 52 minutes and 47 seconds followed by Brad Stone. Dawn Woodward was the first female finisher with a time of one hour and two minutes.

The event also served to crown the Ulitmate Champion for the season that began with a cyclocross race on March 4th.

The Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club locally hosts several events during the year. Formed in 2009, “The main focus of the club is getting new people into the sport. We are also a club for existing athletes to have a place to train,” said Politis. “The growth of the club has been really unexpected. We just hoped to have 30 people to be able to pay for events. We are now at 104 members”

Politis continued, “We are planning a 2013 race series that should be more fantastic than this year and we hope to double the membership by this time next year. “ In addition, “The club has a really good foundation in the community and because of that we are hoping to turn Myrtle Beach into a destination for triathlon races. We’ll be revealing some major races later in the year”
