Kovac, Lauzon take wins in Garden City sprint triathlon

The Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club held their summer sprint series Tri Championships Sunday in Garden City Beach.

With distances of a 500 yard swim, 13 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run, the sprint length triathlon began in a calm ocean, followed by a road course held along Ocean Boulevard.

Michal Kovac finished the race in first place overall with a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes. Runner-up was Diego Sosa, who has won the previous two triathlons of the summer.

May Lauzon finished first in the Female division, with a time of 1:10.

The Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club locally hosts several events during the year. Formed in 2009, “The main focus of the club is getting new people into the sport. We are also a club for existing athletes to have a place to train,” said Pete Politis, event organizer. Their next event will be held September 29th, an Off-Road Tri that will include Kayaking 1 mile , Mountain Biking 9 miles on a single track, followed by a 2 mile Trail.
