Lady Chants’ Cole, Epley earn all-conference honors

Coastal Carolina standouts Shatia Cole and Taylor Epley were both named All-Big South as voted on by the league’s head coaches and media panel.

The All-Conference teams and individual award winners were unveiled at the conference’s annual postseason awards banquet on Thursday evening.

Cole was tabbed a Big South Conference All-Freshman team member, while Epley earned All-Academic team recognition.

Cole is the eighth Chanticleer – each of whom have played under the tutelage of 15th year head coach Alan LeForce – to earn all-freshman honors and the first since Sydnei Moss, who finished her career as Coastal’s eighth all-time leading scorer, earned the honor in 2008. Cole, from Myrtle Beach, finished the regular season as Coastal’s second leading scorer averaging 10.3 points per outing, which also ranked 21st in the Big South.

Cole made an immediate impact for the Chanticleers as she came off the bench and scored a game-high 19 points in leading Coastal to its sixth straight opening day win. She was tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week four times throughout the course of the season, tying Brooke Weisbrod for the most in Coastal Carolina history.

The point guard scored in double-digits 13 times throughout the season and led the Chants in the scoring column nine times. She poured in a season-high 22 points at Charleston Southern, which included two key treys in the final 17 seconds of play. Cole also impressed on the defensive end tallying a team-high 49 steals, which ranks 11th in the conference, that helped lead to Coastal’s 498 points off turnovers.

Epley holds a team-high 3.81 GPA as a biology major focusing on pre-med. The senior saved her best season for last as she is averaging career-highs in every statistical category.

Epley has started every game at center this season and ranks fourth in the Big South with a career-high 42 blocked shots. Her 41 steals this season ranks second on the team while her 97 rebounds rank third. The Newburgh, Ind., native scored a career-high 15 points on 7-of-10 from the floor in the Chanticleers’ dominating win over UNC Asheville on Feb. 6.

Additionally, Epley is a three time member of the Big South Honor Roll, has earned dean’s list in each semester as a member of the Coastal Carolina honors program and is an active member of the Golden Key Honor Society. Epley intends to attend medical school upon graduation.
