Lady Chanticleers fall short to Charleston Southern, 4-3

The Coastal Carolina softball team pulled within a run of Charleston Southern on two separate occasions, but couldn’t score the tying run, as they fell 4-3 on Tuesday.

The Chanticleers are 30-14 overall and 7-5 in the Big South Conference following the game.

The Chanticleers had an opportunity to score in the top of the second when Sara Rasley advanced to third on a wild pitch during Beth Kassuhn’s at bat after stealing second base. Stacy Snellings advanced to second on the wild pitch during Kassuhn’s at bat after being walked.

Charleston Southern took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jazmine Conley advanced home on a single to left field by Megan Lombard. The Buccaneers ended the inning with two left on base.

During the fifth inning Charleston Southern went ahead 2-0 when Courtney Konyk scored on a single to the right side by Jessica Brock.

Coastal Carolina made it a 2-1 game, as Nicole Saggiomo scored on Brooke Donovan’s single to right center during the fifth inning. Jazmin Daigle advanced to third on the play, but the inning came to an end during the Chanticleers next at bat.

In the bottom of the sixth the Buccaneers went back ahead by two runs when Melissa Adams hit a triple down the right line to score Hannah Wagner. Charleston Southern made it a 4-1 game, following a single by Kristin Kelleher that scored Melissa Adams.

Kory Hayden hit a single to the left side to start off the seventh inning. Kiana Quolas was walked during the Chanticleers next at bat. Charleston Southern picked up the first out of the inning before Chelsea Pineda hit a triple to left center that scored Hayden and Quolas to put the score at 4-3. Stacy Snellings reached base with two outs on a walk. The Buccaneers closed out the top of the inning before Coastal was able to tie the game.

Pineda posted one hit and two RBI in three at bats on the afternoon, while being walked once. Donovan finished with two hits and one RBI in four at bats. Hayden recorded one hit and one run in two at bats, along with four assists. She was also walked once in the game. Snellings tallied five putouts for the Chanticleers.

Quolas took the loss for the Chanticleers in the circle after pitching six innings, striking out two, walking just one, while allowing eight hits in 29 batters faced.

Morgan Dowdy picked up the win for the Buccaneers following 6.1 innings pitched. She struck out four, walked four and gave up 10 hits in 33 batters faced. Jennifer Giles recorded the save.

Coastal returns to action on Saturday, April 14 at home in a doubleheader against Big South Conference opponent Liberty . The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
