Lady Chanticleers let one slip away against host Longwood

Longwood outscored Coastal Carolina 52-25 in the second half to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit and hand the Chanticleers a 77-63 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Lancers’ Willett Hall.

For the fourth time this season Coastal Carolina (7-11, 2-6 Big South) had four players finish in double figures led by Angelica Henry’s 15. AJ Jordan, Shatia Cole and Katelyn Connor each chipped in 11 points. Jordan also finished with 11 rebounds to post her third career double-double and the Chants’ fifth of the season.

Longwood (9-9, 6-1 Big South) was led by Daeisha Brown’s game-high 26 points on 9-of-13 from the floor and 7-0f-9 from the line. Crystal Smith poured in 20 points for the Lancers, while Chelsea Coward added a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Longwood, who now stands alone atop the Big South standings, opened the second half on a 19-5 run to take a 44-43 lead with 13:41 to play. Smith ignited the Lancers’ run with a layup on the opening possession of the half and combined with Coward to post 13 of the Lancers’ points during the run.

Kayla Cook split a pair of free throws on Coastal’s next possession to tie the game, but the Brown answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play. The sides exchanged points over the next two-plus minutes before Longwood pieced together a 10-0 run to take a 66-53 lead. Smith opened the run with a jumper and Raven Williams followed with a triple from the wing. Smith then scored in the paint and finished the rally with a deep three following a Coastal turnover.

Jordan and Henry each connected on a pair at the line to pull Coastal back within nine; however, it would not be enough of a spark as Longwood closed the contest scoring 11 of the final 17 points.

For the game, Coastal Carolina shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) and outscored Longwood 16-3 off the bench. Longwood shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the floor and held a 22-16 lead in points off turnovers. The Lancers also won the battle on the boards 44-39.

Coastal Carolina returns home on Thursday to host Winthrop in the first of four straight home games at The HTC Center. The Chants and Eagles are slated to tipoff at 7 p.m.
