Lady Chanticleers suffer 2-1 loss to Western Michigan

It was a great opportunity for the Lady Chanticleers to host the 2012 Coastal Carolina Women’s Soccer Classic.

They almost added to the thrill when they played host to Western Michigan on Sunday, but fell just one goal shy in a 2-1 loss.

CCU head women’s soccer coach Paul Hogan commented on getting to play host to the event.

“It is good. You always want to play at home. When I first got here, we played so many road games, so having the ability to bring teams here and play in front of your home fans,” Hogan added. “It is a chance to build a connection to the community.”

Western Michigan (2-1) capitalized early at the 15:14 mark on a pass from Diana Dedvukaj to Aubrey Sudomier, who finished the goal in the back far corner.

Despite the loss, Coastal (1-2) was able to gain some solid chances in the second half. The Lady Chanticleers got seven shots total with four being on goal.

After  a flurry of chances on offense by CCU, the Lady Broncos took advantage of a transition run down the left side. Lauren Fearday found Rachel Chaney at the 81:07 point in the second. Chaney put a one-touch volley from the right side inside the 12-yard mark in the opposite corner.

Coastal was able to get several short through passes late to the right corner. Meagan Borger then took a shot from the right corner just past the hands of keeper Michelle Watson.

Hogan said the team had a far greater energy in the second half.

“I thought that we were much better in the second half. I didn’t think our team had a great spirit before the game,” Hogan added. “The first half was pretty average. (The second half was much better). I told our kids the effort part was there. Now we just have to work on the result part of things.”

Charlotte Radcliff led Coastal with two shots. Sudomier finished three shots on goal for Western Michigan. Chaney added three shots, being two on goal. CCU had all seven of its shots in the second half to that of 12 by the Lady Broncos.
