Lady Chanticleers sweep doubleheader vs. Winthrop

Playing in their final regular season series of the 2012 season the Coastal Carolina softball team earned a 3-2 win in 10 innings and a 4-1 victory over Winthrop on Saturday.

The Chanticleers improved to 37-17 overall, while moving to 12-8 in the Big South Conference following the two wins.

After both teams were held hitless through the first three innings of play, Winthrop went ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning after Chelsey Schoenfeldt hit a home run to right field that also scored Kristy Noble.

The Chanticleers threatened to score in the sixth inning with Brooke Donovan on third with only one out, but the Eagles recorded back-to-back outs to take the game to the seventh inning.

In the seventh Coastal picked up three straight outs, before tying the score at 2-2. Jazmin Daigle earned the first run for the Chanticleers on a double to left center field by Stacy Snellings. Beth Kassuhn, who was pinch running for Snellings, scored the tying run on a single by Kory Hayden through the left side. The game moved into extra innings after Winthrop picked up the third out on strikes.

Both teams struggled to get runners into scoring position during the eighth and ninth inning and in the tenth inning the game would use the international tiebreaker rule.

During Jenna Harbin’s at bat, Jessie Winans through the ball to home plate to Chelsea Pineda in order to get Kelly Blea out for the second out of the inning. Kiana Quolas struck out the next batter to take the game into the bottom of the inning.

The Eagles earned the first out on a strike out, but during the Chanticleers next at bat Daigle hit a single to right field that scored Courtney Howell to give Coastal the 3-2 win.

Hayden ended the game with one hit and one RBI in two at bats, while being walked three times. She also had a team high four assists in the win. Daigle ended the game with one hit, one run and one RBI in three at bats, while being walked twice. Snellings posted two hits and one RBI in two at bats, while also being walked once. Pineda recorded a team high 12 putouts.

Quolas pitched a career high 10 innings, in which she also recorded a career high 11 strikeouts on the way to her 21st victory of the season from the circle. She walked just two in the win and gave up three hits in 37 batters faced.

Schoenfeldt picked up the loss after pitching 1.1 innings, striking out three, walking one and allowing two hits in seven batters faced.
