Lady Chants can’t get over hump against Lady Camels

Coastal Carolina was unable to make a seventh-inning comeback after a back-and-forth battle with Campbell as the Fighting Camels took the final game of the series 5-4 on Saturday.

Coastal Carolina (33-17 overall, 10-8 Big South) got on the board in the top of the first inning on a double by Cacia Pierre that scored Brooke Donovan.

The Fighting Camels answered in the bottom of the inning as Stephanie Jones hit a double of her own, which scored Sarah Forgacs to tie the game at 1-1. During the second inning Campbell went ahead by a run when Ericka Nesbitt hit a single to right field that scored Kerstine Womack, although she was close to being out at the plate.

Courtney Howell tied the game up at two apiece after she stole third and then advanced home on Sara Rasley’s sacrifice fly to left field. Coastal took the 3-1 lead in the fifth when Sarah Maples crossed home on Beth Kassuhn’s single to the short stop.

Campbell regained the lead in the fifth inning, as Nesbitt scored as Taylor McGee was walked. Stephanie Jones scored during Campbell ’s next at bat, as Christina Melton was hit by a pitch. Womack made it a 5-3 game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single to right center field by Jones.

Nicole Saggiomo pulled the Chanticleers within a run in the top of the seventh, scoring on a single to left center by Pierre with no outs. Camel recorded three straight outs to take the game by a final of 5-4.

Maples finished the game with three hits and one run in three at bats. Pierre had two hits, two RBI in three at bats, while being walked once. Kassuhn had one hit and one RBI in three at bats. Chelsea Pineda posted six putouts in the game and Winans had three assists.

Ashley Bagwell pitched 6.0 innings, striking out five, walking three and allowing nine hits in 31 batters faced.

Olivia Scarborough earned the win for Campbell after pitching six innings, striking out two, walking five and giving up eight hits in 32 batters faced.  Brittany Arnn recorded the save.

Coastal returns to action on Wednesday, April 25 in its final road game of the season in a doubleheader against non-conference opponent UNC Wilmington. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m.
