Lady Chants cap fall season with ninth place at Palmetto

Coastal Carolina completed round two Monday morning, firing an eight-over 310, then turned in its best score of the three-round tournament to finish tied for ninth with a score of 919 (311-310-298) at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by College of Charleston at the par 72 and 5,972-yard Kiawah Island Resort-Turtle Point course.

Kansas, ranked 39th by Golfstat, won the team title with a 12-over 54-hole score of 876 (297-295-284). Georgia State, who was led by individual medalist Melissa Siviter (77-70-67=214), claimed team runner-up honors with a score of 879.

Coastal Carolina was led by Lena Schaeffner who tied for seventh with a final score of 220 (75-73-72). The sophomore improved over each round as she concluded the event with an even-par 72. Schaeffer tallied a total of 10 birdies and 34 pars through her 54 holes of play. The top-10 finish is her second of the season and fourth of her collegiate career.

Marissa Hinchman tied for 11th in the 99-competitor field followed by Frida Castillo (t-68th), Saskia Sterud (t-71st) and Emee Herbert (t-87th).

Hinchman, who notched her third top-20 of the season and seventh of her Chanticleer career, also carded an even-par 72 on the final round. She was 3-under with three holes to play during the third round, but bogeys on her 16th, 17th and 18th holes saddled her with a par score. She finished the tournament with nine total birdies.

Castillo finished the event at 22-over with her 238 (82-79-77) 54-hole tally. Her final round featured birdies on the par-4, 383-yard eighth and par-5, 482-yard tenth to go along with 11 pars.

Sterud and Herbert rounded out Coastal’s scoring. Sterud shot a 5-over 77 Monday and carded a 23-over 239 (80-82-77) for the tournament. Herbert turned in a three-day tally of 245 (82-82-81). Sterud finished the event with four birdies, while Herbert had five.

The event concluded the Chants’ five-event fall competition schedule. Coastal returns to the links at the Almaden Country Club in San Jose, Calif., for the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational on March 3-4.
