Lady Chants win Big South, face UGA in Athens Regional

Hours after winning its first Big South Tournament championship since the 2006 season, the Coastal Carolina softball team learned its road to the Women’s College World Series starts as the No. 4 seed at the Athens Regional on May 17-20.

Coastal squares of with No. 1 seed and host Georgia on Friday, May 18 from Jack Turner Stadium. North Carolina will be the No. 2 seed and will play third-seeded Georgia Southern in its opening game. Game times have yet to be determined. Please check back to GoCCUSports.com for further schedule and ticket information.

The winner of the Athens regional matches up with the winner of the Knoxville regional which features No. 7 Tennessee, Miami (Ohio), UAB and Virginia Tech in the Super Regionals.

The Chanticleers, who finished with a 13-8 Big South regular season record to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, secured their fifth NCAA Regional appearance by dispatching top-seeded Radford twice on Saturday in the double-elimination tournament before notching a 4-1 victory Sunday over third seed Charleston Southern, fueled by a 13 strikeout performance by Ashley Bagwell, in the Big South Championship game.

Coastal, led by third-year head coach Kelley Green, racked up a 43-18 overall record to produce the program’s most wins since the 1994 squad finished the season with a 44-15 record. The team’s 40-plus wins are only the third time the Coastal program has achieved the prestigious platform.

The Chanticleers defeated Charleston Southern 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Radford Softball Field in Radford, Va., for their fourth straight win in the tourney to come out of the losers’ bracket to claim the title.

Ashley Bagwell pitched a complete game, tying her career high of 13 strikeouts, while not giving up a walk and allowing just three hits in 25 batters faced. Melanie Stickney posted a team high six putouts. Stephanie Sbardella recorded three assists on the afternoon.
