Lady Chants crash Sun Belt title game in inaugural year

ccuwsoc-5In its first season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference, the second-seeded Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team defeated third-seeded Little Rock, 2-0, Friday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex to advance to the Sun Belt Championship match on Sunday.

With the win, Coastal (12-5-3) advanced to its first Championship match since the 2008 campaign. Coastal will take on the winner of the South Alabama-Appalachian State game in a 2 p.m. (ET) match on Sunday.

Two second half goals from freshman Kylie Bostick and All-Sun Belt selection Amber Adams sparked the Chanticleer offensive to lead Coastal to its 12th shutout of the season.

Despite the score, Little Rock outshot the Chanticleers 15-9 but Coastal took advantage of its chances in front of goal to hold a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Adams, Kayla Christian and Ambria Shutts each finished with two shots while having one on frame.

Throughout the first half, neither team was able to generate an offensive attack and came up empty each attempt in the final third.

Little Rock fouled Coastal 30-yards outside the box to set up Bostick up for a free kick. Bostick lifted the ball into the box to then sail over the Little Rock goaltender Sara Small to give Coastal the 1-nil lead in the 50th minute.

Adams’ tally came less than five minutes after Bostick’s goal. In the 54th minute, Christian drove the ball down the right flank to cross the ball behind the defensive line to find Adams. Adams collected the ball and drilled it into the back of the net to make the score 2-0.

Coastal held on to its lead despite the Little Rock offensive testing CCU’s back line. The Trojans best opportunity came in the 60th minute when a header from Hali Long was directed towards the frame of the goal but senior goaltender Becca Austin snatched it off the line to keep the Trojans scoreless.

Austin (10-4-3) finished the game with four saves and notched her seventh solo shutout of the season. The seven shutouts moved Austin tied for second-best in program history.
