Lady Chants fall to Winthrop

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team fell to Winthrop by a 3-1 count at the CCU Soccer Field on Thursday evening. The setback moves Coastal to 2-14-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the Big South as Winthrop improves to 11-6-0 (7-2-0 Big South).

The sides traded periods of possessions early in the first half before the visiting Eagles were able to break the deadlock with a Krystyna Freda goal in the 33rd minute of play. Freda received a pass from Courtney Durbin inside the Chanticleer ’18, defeated a Coastal defender one-on-one before placing a low-lying shot into the left corner of the net.

After a pair of substitutions by both teams, the Eagles struck again in the 36th minute as Ashley Henderson scored her first goal of the season. Henderson uncorked a blast on a free kick attempt from 35-yards out that found nylon in the upper 90.

Coastal was unable to find the net in its four shots before the end of the first half as Winthrop took the 2-nil lead into the intermission.

The second half opened just as the first with the teams exchanging both possessions and shots with neither able to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Freda scored Winthrop’s final goal of the game with nine minutes remaining to give the garnet clad visitors a 3-0 lead. Allie VandeWater picked off an errant Chanticleer pass near the box and slid a great pass to Freda, who fired the ball home to score her Big South leading 13th goal of the season.

Freshman Shelby Evans scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 90th minute to provide the 3-1 final. Alyssa Clark set up the scoring play with a well placed corner kick into the box that found the foot of Evans. The assist was the third on the year for the sophomore defender.

Morgan Thomas tallied a team-high five shots with three falling on frame. Kacey Kelley, Chelsea Strange, Rylie Johnson and Evans each unleashed two shot attempts.

Coastal finished the game with a 15-14 advantage in shots along with a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. However, Winthrop won the goalkeeping battle with a 5-2 margin in saves.

Coastal returns to the pitch in Conway for their regular-season finale against Gardner-Webb at noon Saturday. Prior to the match, Chanticleer seniors Jessie Benchley, Tori Strengari and Julia Baldwin will be honored for their accomplishments and contributions to the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer program.
