Lady Chants hang six on PC for third straight victory

Coming off a pair of hard-fought one goal wins, the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team made sure their latest victory came a little easier. The Chanticleers exploded for their biggest output in five years Saturday, tallying three goals in each half to roll by Presbyterian 6-1 in Big South Conference play at the CCU Soccer Field.

It marks the sixth time that Coastal has scored six goals in a game, but the first since October of 2007 against High Point. The Chanticleers tied a season-high with 30 shots and put a season-best 18 on goal.

“We gave up the early goal last game against Asheville and so we challenged the kids and they were fantastic today,” head coach Paul Hogan said. “We lost to this team last year so it was a game that we wanted to win. We’re moving up the conference rankings right now so it was a great win. A lot of people played and a lot of players made a difference. We’re excited.”

The Chants have now won three games in a row and five of their last six to improve to 8-7-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the Big South. Presbyterian fell to 2-13-0 and 2-6-0.

Coastal found the net three times in the first 23 minutes of the game, with Fia Jonsson scoring twice directly off corner kicks. Senior Ashley Day added the other in the opening half before sophomore Kacey Kelley, freshman Camille Christie and junior Cisca Okoko each scored in the second half.

The Chanticleers came out attacking from the opening whistle and recorded nine shots in the first 15 minutes before Jonsson scored on the 10th attempt in the 16th minute. She angled a ball from the left corner into the right side of the net for her third goal of the season.

“She told us last week that she can take corner kicks so that’s something that we can definitely use going forward,” Hogan said.

The Chants used it again just over four minutes as later as Jonsson struck from the same corner, and with the Chants creating traffic in front the ball got past the Presbyterian goalkeeper into the near side. Day then made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute with an assist from junior Maddie Phillips, her third of the season. Day got the through ball near the top of the box and one-touched a shot into left corner for her third tally of the year.

Presbyterian got on the board in the 29th minute on a goal by Kelly Kozera, but it was one of just three shots that the Blue Hose recorded in the game.

Coastal finished the opening 45 minutes with a 16-2 shot advantage and didn’t slow down much in the second half. Kelley scored her team-best eighth goal in the 50th minute. Junior Christina Stern sent a through ball down the middle and Kelley outran her defender, beat the oncoming Presbyterian keeper and put it in the vacated net.

The Chants then scored off a corner kick for the third time in the 59th minute as Christie put home a loose ball in front to notch her second of the season. The goal followed the eighth of Coastal’s nine corners in the game.

Okoko then capped the scoring in the 81st minute with her first career goal. She got loose on a run up the right side for a one-on-one with the keeper and put home the shot after a couple of dribbles.

Coastal continued to pressure the Blue Hose net the remainder of the game, but wasn’t able to add to their goal total despite several close chances.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Spencer notched her seventh win of the season, making one save. Freshman Faith Farley played the last 20 minutes and also had one save.

The Chants remain at home for two games next week. They host Campbell on Thursday, Oct. 18 for a 7 p.m. kickoff and then welcome High Point on Saturday, Oct. 20 for Senior Day.
