Lady Chants lead after first round of Big South tourney

ccuwgolf-splitscreenNo. 2 seed Coastal Carolina leads the 2016 Big South Women’s Golf Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting after Monday’s first round with its 6-over par 294, and holds a two-stroke advantage over No. 1 seed Campbell entering Tuesday’s second round.  The Championship is being contested at DeBordieu Golf Club (par 72, 6,082 yards) in Georgetown.

The Fighting Camels (296) are six shots ahead of third-place Charleston Southern (302).  Winthrop sits in fourth-place (310) with Gardner-Webb in fifth at 313.  Presbyterian College and Longwood are tied for sixth at 323, while Radford is eighth with a team aggregate score of 325.  High Point is ninth at 329.

Campbell’s Annelie Sjoholm and Coastal Carolina’s Lena Schaeffner share the 18-hole lead at 1-under 71.  Sjoholm opened the day with two birdies in her first three holes and was the outright leader at 3-under after a birdie on No. 12.  She suffered three consecutive bogeys before a birdie on No. 17 to remain in red numbers.  Schaeffner opened with a bogey and was 1-over until back-to-back birdies on holes 8 and 9.  She bogeyed her 10th hole to fall to even par before a birdie on No. 14 put her at 1-under where she remained the rest of the round.

The players enjoyed sunny and 70-degree weather with occasional winds in the 10-12 mph range.  Coastal Carolina’s Bailey Cocca finished at even par (72), while Campbell’s Nadine White was 1-over at 73.  Coastal’s Barbora Bakova and Winthrop’s Ashley Sloup round out the top five at 2-over 74.

Second round action will begin Tuesday, April 12 with a double tee beginning at 8:30am (No. 1) and 9:00am (No. 10).  The event is free and open to the public.
