Lady Chants’ losing streak against Liberty reaches 45

ccuwhoops-libertyLiberty won its 45th consecutive game against the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team, the second-longest active winning streak in the nation, despite a strong bid to snap the 20-year drought against the Lady Flames.

Coastal managed to cut an 11-point fourth quarter deficit down to one with just over a minute remaining in regulation, but two late turnovers denied the Chanticleers an opportunity to overtake Liberty in a tight 65-63 loss Tuesday night at The HTC Center.

The loss is Coastal’s fourth straight at home against a Big South opponent, and drops the Chants to 7-10, 2-6 on the season. Liberty moves to 9-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference as the Flames enter a five-way tie for first place with UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Radford and Presbyterian.

Liberty’s 11-point lead — the largest of the game for the Flames — with 6:14 remaining in the fourth quarter was erased in less than three minutes as Coastal strung together a 10-0 run to pull within one point with 3:56 to go.

After trading baskets over the next several possessions, Liberty found itself with another one-point lead with 1:11 remaining. Derriel Banyard then blocked a shot by Mickayla Sanders on Liberty’s next possession, giving Coastal the ball and a chance to take the lead with 44 seconds to play. A traveling call on Jas Adams, however, turned the ball back over to Liberty and Jaymee Fisher-Davis hit a free throw to extend Liberty’s lead to two. Another travel by Yasmin Miller with 11 seconds left allowed Liberty to seal the game on a pair of free throws by Sanders.

The game featured five ties and six lead changes as the scoring margin stayed within five points for the majority of the game.

Coastal relied mainly on its outside shooting, hitting 12 of a season-high 36 (33.3 percent) attempts from beyond the arc. The Chants added nine more baskets from inside to finish 21-of-64 (32.8 percent) from the field overall.
