Lady Chants win 10th game in a row with twinbill sweep

Playing in its final home tournament of the season the Coastal Carolina softball team opened the Chanticleer Showdown on Friday with a 9-0 win against North Carolina A&T in five innings and a 7-5 win against La Salle .

The Chanticleers improved to 18-4 on the season and extended their winning streak to 10 games with the two wins.

The Chanticleers picked up two runs in the first inning against the Aggies as Sarah Maples scored on a single by Kory Hayden. Two batters later Hayden advanced home on a single to the shortstop by Stacy Snellings.

North Carolina A&T had a runner in scoring position during the bottom of the first inning, as Hope Fletcher advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Aggies picked up the third out before getting on the board.

Coastal extended its lead to seven in the top of the third inning. Jessie Winans drove in two runs with a single to left field that scored Chelsea Pineda and Kiana Quolas. Maples hit another double to left center to advance Winans and Sara Rasley home. Following the pitching change Jazmin Daigle recorded a double to right center field, which scored Maples.

The Aggies only posted one hit from the second inning through the fourth inning. Coastal made it a 9-0 game in the top of the fifth following a single by Daigle that scored Winans and a sacrifice hit by Hayden that advanced Maples home.

Coastal posted a three and out in the bottom of the fifth to give Coastal the 9-0 win.

Maples finished the game with two hits, three runs and two RBI in three at bats, while also being walked once. Winans posted two hits, two runs and two RBI in three at bats. Pineda recorded six putouts in the win.

Quolas earned the win on the mound following five innings pitched in which she struck out seven, while allowing just three hits and not allowing a walk in 18 batters faced. She is now 9-1 on the mound for the Chanticleers with a 0.53 ERA.

Ashira Dobison recorded the loss for the Aggies on the mound after pitching 2.2 innings giving up seven hits and three walks in 19 batters faced.

During the second game for the Chanticleers, Coastal again earned a run in the first, as Daigle scored following a double by Pineda to left field during the bottom of the inning.

La Salle went three and out during the top of the second inning and the Chanticleers built up a six run lead during the bottom of the inning. Rasley crossed home on a double by Maples to make it a 3-0 game. Maples then scored on the next at bat along with Donovan on a double to left center by Daigle. Cacia Pierre recorded an RBI in the inning after hitting a single up the middle that advanced Kelsey McNaughton home to make it a 6-0 game.

Although the Chanticleers looked to have the game won, La Salle made a run late in the game scoring two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the score at 6-5.

Bagwell came in to relieve during the sixth inning and picked up the final out before the Explorers could tie the game.

During the bottom of the sixth inning Courtney Howell put the Chanticleers ahead by two, as she scored during Winans at bat to make it a 7-5 game.

The Chanticleers gave up just one hit in the top of the seventh, as they went on to take the game 7-5.

Daigle posted three hits, two RBI and one run in four at bats, while Pierre recorded two hits and one RBI in three at bats. Pineda completed the game with seven putouts and Winans tallied three assists.

Morgan Mastriania posted the win for the Chants on the mound after pitching 5.1 innings, in which she struck out three, allowed nine hits and one walk in 27 batters faced.

Kristin Travers recorded the loss for the Explorers, following 1.1 innings pitched. She gave up nine hits in 12 batters faced.

Coastal returns to action on Saturday, March 10 in the second day of the Chanticleer Showdown at 11 a.m. against North Carolina A&T. The Chanticleers will also play Hampton at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
