Lady Chants off to slow start at Darius Rucker tournament

Coastal Carolina women’s golf team fired a 307 to stand in 14th place at the inaugural Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the 6,160-yard, par 71 Long Cove Club in Hilton Head.

Alabama, ranked second, leads the event with a four-over 288, followed by tenth-ranked North Carolina (292). Ninth-ranked Georgia, No. 41 UCF and No. 31 Virginia sit tied for third with 13-over totals of 297.

Junior Jessica Alexander carded a 73 to tie for 10th after 18-holes. Alexander was even through four holes before suffering a double bogey six on the par-4 fifth. However, she retained her composure to shoot even over the final 13 holes. Despite finishing 2-over for the round, Alexander picked up birdies on the fourth, seventh and 17th hole.

Senior Kaitlin Higginbotham is tied for 16th, shooting 3-over par 74 to mark her best round of the spring season. Sophomore Brittany Henderson tied for 53rd, turning in a 7-over 78. She had 11 pars versus four bogeys and two double bogeys, with a birdie on the par-3 second hole.

Frida Castillo and Courtney Boe are tied for 73rd, completing Coastal’s contingent.

The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate will resume with 18 holes on Saturday and with a final 18 holes on Sunday.
