Lady Chants rack up 26 hits in twinbill sweep of G-W

ccusoft-swing2015The Coastal Carolina softball team racked up 26 hits, including five doubles and four home runs, while rolling to 8-1 and 11-0 victories over host Gardner-Webb Friday afternoon in a Big South doubleheader.

Amanda Daneker went 7 for 8 at the plate on the day with a home run and five RBIs to lead the offensive output for the Chanticleers (20-17 overall), who have now won seven straight Big South Conference games to improve to 8-2 in the league. Morgan Noad had four hits, including a homer, and three RBIs, while Sara Rasley also homered among her three hits, with four RBIs. Kory Hayden added three hits and three RBIs.

Kiana Quolas and Kelsey Dominik combined to allow just the one run on 11 total hits in picking up the victories while being backed by flawless defense. Quolas (11-10) notched the 84th win of her career to move into a tie for fifth in Big South history, while also tying for sixth on the conference’s list with her 94th complete game.

Noad got the offense going in the opener, leading off the second inning with her team-leading 12th homer of the season and 42nd of her career.

The Chants then batted around in the fourth, scoring four runs on six hits. Hayden hit a leadoff double and Noad followed with a single before Daneker was the opposite way for a three-run homer to right, her sixth of the year. Rasley then doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

Coastal then scored three times in the sixth to put itself in position for another run-rule win. Kailey Mellen led off with a single, Bri Chiusano walked and Quolas hit an RBI single to left-center. Hayden followed with a run-scoring single to left and Daneker recorded her career-high tying fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to right.

Noad went 3 for 3 for her fourth career three-hit game, while Daneker tied her career highs with three hits and four RBIs. Chisuano added two hits and was among eight of the nine Chanticleer players in the lineup with at least one as they totaled a season-high 15 in the game.

Gardner-Webb (11-21, 3-10) avoided the run rule with a home run leading off the bottom of the inning, but Quolas recorded six of the next seven batters to close it out. She scattered seven hits and struck out three with one walk. The senior pitched around leadoff hits to start the second, third and fourth innings, stranding two Runnin’ Bulldog runners at third and one at third.

In the second game, back-to-back doubles by Dominik and Rasley in the second inning put the Chants ahead 1-0. Coastal then broke it open with a six-run third with four hits. Taylor Harris reached on a fielding error leading off and hustled to second on the play. Chiusano followed with a bunt single and Hayden drew a walk on a long at-bat to load the bases. Noad then hit a two-run double over the left-fielder and Daneker singled to right to plate another run. Two batters later, Rasley hammered one over the centerfield fence for a three-run shot and a 7-0 advantage. The homer was her sixth of the season.

The Chanticleers then tacked on four more in the top of the seventh, capped by a three-run homer by Devon Steiner, the first longball of her career. Hayden hit a leadoff single, Noad walked and Daneker singled to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Dominik plated Hayden and Steiner immediately followed with a drive over the fence in left-center.

Coastal totaled 11 hits in the game, as Daneker set a career high with a perfect 4 for 4. Rasley added two hits, along with four RBIs, tying a career-best.

Dominik, meanwhile, allowed just four hits in six innings, while striking out two and walking one. She pitched around a leadoff walk in the first, a double in the second and two singles in the third before retiring 10 of the last 11 batters she faced.

Mackenzie Conrad pitched the seventh and Timi Tooley helped preserve the shutout with an outfield assist to the plate from left for the final out.

Coastal will go for the sweep when the teams wrap up the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
