Lady Chants rally in 10th to sweep twinbill from UNCW

Playing in its final road games of the season the Coastal Carolina softball team used a four run first inning followed by a five run second inning to eventually win the first game 10-0 before taking the second game 1-0 in 10 innings.

The Chanticleers improved to 35-17 overall on the season following the two victories. Coastal remained at 10-8 in the Big South.

Coastal used a strong first inning to build a 4-0 lead. Sarah Maples scored the first run for the Chanticleers on a single by Cacia Pierre after taking third on a wild pitch. Brooke Donovan advanced home after the Seahawks walked Jazmin Daigle. The Chanticleers went ahead 3-0 when Stacy Snellings reached first on an error by the third baseman that scored Kiana Quolas. The final run of the inning came as Cacia Pierre scored as Jessie Winans was walked with the bases loaded.

The Chanticleers recorded a three and out against UNC Wilmington in the bottom of the first inning. During the top of the second Coastal continued to play well offensively, as they scored five additional runs. Pierre got the scoring going in the second inning recording her sixth home run of the season that scored Hayden and Quolas. Chelsea Pineda hit her sixth double of the season during the Chants next at bat. Daigle then reached first after being walked. Jessie Winans followed that up by recording a single to right center that scored Daigle and Chelsea Pineda.

In the third inning, Hayden tallied her 13 home run of the season, as she knocked the ball out of left center field to put the score at 10-0. UNC Wilmington grabbed its first hit of the game during the bottom of the inning with two out on a Laura Sykes single to left field. Coastal picked up the third out before the Seahawks were able to get any further offense going.

During the final two innings Coastal picked up one hit, as the Chanticleers had several pinch hitters.

Pierre ended the game with two hits, four RBI and one home run in three at bats. Hayden and Quolas both finished the game with two runs and one hit. Donovan and Pienda recorded one hit and one run in three at bats, while Pineda had a team high four putouts. Maples had one hit and one run in two at bats, as she was also walked once. Daigle had one hit, one RBI in one at bat and was walked twice. Sara Rasley tallied a team high six putouts and Jessie Winans had four assists in the win.

Quolas pitched each of the five innings earning the win in the circle after allowing just one hit, striking out four and giving up just one walk in 19 batters faced.

Amanda Davenport took the loss for the Seahawks following 1.1 innings pitched, striking out one, walking four and allowing six hits in 15 batters faced.

Heading into the second game the defense for both team played well for both teams, as only three hits were allowed through the first three innings of play. Through the first five innings there were only five hits.

The pitching dual continued into extra innings and Coastal finally took the game in the 10th inning after going to the international tie breaker. Jazmin Daigle hit a sacrifice bunt to move Nicole Saggiomo to third base. Winans drove in Saggiomo two batters later after hitting a single down the right side to put the Chants ahead 1-0.

UNC Wilmington threatened to score in the bottom of the inning after Lauryn Buckworth hit a single to left field that moved Katie Houmard to third base with two outs. Coastal earned the third out during the Seahawks next at bat to take the game 1-0.

Hayden almost tallied her 14th home run of the season in the ninth inning, but UNC Wilmington picked up the out at the fence.

Winans completed the game with one hit and one RBI in four at bats. Daigle posted one hit in three at bats. Rasley had a team high 10 putouts and Hayden had seven assists.

Bagwell pitched a complete game for the Chanticleers striking out six, walking four and gave up nine hits in 42 batters faced.

Casey Rowland struck out 12, walked four and allowed three hits in 36 batters faced over 10.0 innings.

The Chanticleer return to action on Saturday, May 5 in their final regular season series against Winthrop . Coastal and the Eagles will play a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. Sarah Maples, Chelsea Pineda and Stacy Snellings, the three Chanticleer seniors, are going to be recognized prior to Sunday’s game that is set to start at 1 p.m.
