Lady Chants crack Top 25 in mid-major softball ratings

The Coastal Carolina softball team is ranked #21 in the nation in the Mid-Major Top 25 Poll with a 20-5 record.

“It’s nice to be recognized for our performance so far this season,” said head coach Kelley Green. “We will continue to work hard and build on what we have accomplished up to this point.”

Hawaii sits atop the poll with an undefeated record of 21-0, while also-unbeaten Louisiana-Lafayette is second with a 22-0 record and Fresno State rounds out the top three with a 16-9 record.

Coastal is having its best season since 1994 when the team went 22-3 through the first 25 games. The Chanticleers are 17-3 at home and went on a 12 game win streak from Feb. 25 through March 10.

Coastal swept South Carolina on March 7 for the first time since 2006, beating the Gamecocks 2-1 and 5-2 this season. During the Florida State Tournament in Tallahassee , Fla. the Chanticleers earned a 4-2 win over North Dakota State , who is ranked #11 in the Mid Major Top 25 Poll.

Freshman Kiana Quolas has played a key role for Coastal this season, as she is second in the nation in earned run average (0.45), ninth in hits allowed per seven innings (3.6), 12th in shutouts (5.0), 19th in walks allowed per seven innings (1.08) and 21st in victories (10.0).

Also playing a pivotal role for Coastal has been fellow freshman Kory Hayden who is ranked fifth in sacrifice flies (3.0), 25th in home runs (7.0) and 49th in slugging percentage (0.791).

Coastal, the lone Big South Conference program in the poll, travels to Clearwater, Fla. this weekend to take part in the USF Under Armour Tournament. The Chanticleers open the tournament against Long Island at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Coastal also faces Hartford on Friday at 2:15 p.m. On Saturday, March 17 at 11:15 a.m. the Chants will play Boston University, which is ranked #25 in the Mid Major Top 25 Poll.
