Lady Chants score shutout of Citadel in home opener

ccuwsoc-21familiThe Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team struck for two goals within a span of less than two minutes during the first half and contained The Citadel offense throughout for a 2-0 shutout victory Sunday evening in its home opener.

Freshman Daniella Famili and senior Kacey Kelley scored the goals, while Sam Patterson and Famili tallied assists as the Chanticleers (1-1-0) rebounded from a one-goal loss in Friday’s first game. The Citadel dropped to 1-1-0.

Faith Farley notched both her first career win and shutout in the game, needing to make just one save as Coastal controlled play and outshot the Bulldogs 14-5, including 8-1 on goal.

After narrowly missing on a several opportunities in the game first’s 15 minutes, Famili converted one for her first career goal in 19th minute. Maddie Phillips sent a ball into the box and that was headed back out and came to Patterson near the right corner. The sophomore headed it back toward the far post and Famili was there to one-touch it off a bounce into the near side.

Kelley made it 2-0 just 1:18 later with her second goal of the season and 18th of her career on a breakaway. Famili sent a throughpass right up the middle and Kelley got behind The Citadel defense, ran on to the ball, made one dribble just inside the box and easily put the shot into the left side past drawn-out Bulldogs goalkeeper Naomi Carter.

Coastal continued to control possession the remainder of the half and into the second 40 minutes as well. Sam Patterson, Amber Adams, Camille Christie and Mikayla Williams all put shots on goal, but Carter made the stops.

The Bulldogs were able to mount more of an attack later in the half, but the Chants’ defense, led by Phillips, Rylie Johnson and Melanie Flatter was there to prevent any dangerous scoring opportunities and did not surrender a shot on goal in the half.

Offensively, Kelley had a team-high five shots in the game, while eight other Chanticleers recorded at least one.

Coastal, which improved to 8-5-2 in home openers, will play its next two games at CCU Soccer Stadium, as well, hosting Charlotte on Friday, Aug. 29 and Wofford on Sunday, Aug. 31.
