Lady Chants’ season comes to close on buzzer-beater

ccuwhoops-14Amanda Coffer drained a deep 3-pointer as time expired to lift No. 8 seed Campbell past No. 9 seed Coastal Carolina, 67-64 Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 2016 Big South Tournament in Asheville. Coffer finished with a game-high 29 points and four 3-pointers, and tied the first round record with four blocks.

Coastal Carolina was led by Ced Gibson’s 26 points – matching her career high – and received a season-high 20 points from Jas Adams. The Chanticleers rallied from an 18-point deficit to eventually tie the game at 64-64 on free throws with seconds remaining.

The teams traded baskets the first five minutes of the contest, as Coffer scored four of Campbell’s first six points in a 6-6 game until Sarah Smith put CU ahead for the first time at 8-6, just before the first media timeout. The Camels moved ahead 12-8 and took a 15-10 advantage on MaKala Rouse’s three-pointer. Coffer’s three-pointer made it 18-10 for an 8-point first period lead. Her nine points led all scorers after the first 10 minutes of play.

RaeChaun Edwards put Campbell ahead 20-10, and another Coffer three made the score 23-10 which forced Coastal to call timeout. Coastal’s Gibson ended the 16-2 run with a three-pointer with 5:25 left in the first half to make the score 28-13. Gibson drained another three to make the score 30-16, and scored again to cut the Camel lead to 12 with 3:43 remaining. Gibson scored Coastal’s final 12 points of the first half and had 16 in the first 20 minutes

Coffer dominated the first half with 15 points and 4 blocks, which tied the Big South First Round record, as the Camels took a 15-point lead into intermission.

The second half opened with the teams trading baskets and the Chants getting within 13 points with 5:30 remaining in the third. Adams got the team within 11 and later converted a steal and layup to make it a two possession game at 45-38 with 3:33 left during a 16-8 Coastal run.

Summer Price’s three-pointer put Campbell back ahead by 12 (50-38), but the Chanticleers continued to battle and got within seven with 6:43 left on Adams’ putback in the lane. Later in the stanza, Gibson’s floater made it a one-point game and then Nicole Isaacsburied an open three-pointer for CCU’s first lead since the first period. Just a few minutes later, Coffer hit her game-winning three off a pass from Edwards.
