Lady Chants’ season end in first-ever trip to tourney

cculax-13Fifth-seeded Coastal Carolina was eliminated from the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Championship on Wednesday afternoon after suffering a 14-8 loss to fourth-seeded Winthrop in a quarterfinal game at Eagle Field.

The loss ends the Chanticleers’ season with a 5-12 overall record while the win for Winthrop advances the Eagles to the semifinal round where they will face the winner of top-seeded High Point vs. No. 8 Presbyterian.

The Chanticleers had plenty of scoring chances against the Eagles but couldn’t convert them into goals. Coastal outshot Winthrop 29-24, won 18 draw controls to Winthrop’s 6 and held a 21-19 advantage in ground balls. The Chanticleers struggled on free position shots however, scoring on just three of their 11 chances.

Freshman Alicia Geiter and junior Lily Yednock each recorded hat tricks for Coastal. Geiter’s three goals all came in the first half while Yednock’s were all scored in the second. Sara Nolan and Maggie Carr each netted one for the Chants. Nolan additionally set a single-game school record by winning nine draw controls.

Winthrop’s offense was led by Jenna Kasmarik and Hayley Krause, each of whom recorded four goals, while Krause added an assist for a game-high five points. Shannon Gallagher found the net three times while Abigail Blevins, Sydney Cope and Mary Accomando rounded out the Eagles’ goal-scorers with one apiece.

Despite going a man down early due to a yellow card to Danielle Ellis, Winthrop was able to put the first two goals on the board just 13 seconds apart. Cope won the draw control following Kasmarik’s game-opening goal and immediately marched into Coastal’s end where she slid one past Maria Platsidakis, who was given the start in net for the Chants.

Geiter notched Coastal’s first of the day at 23:41 of the first on a free position shot, but Gallagher countered for the Eagles less than a minute later to give Winthrop a 3-1 lead.

Back-to-back Coastal goals from Nolan and Geiter evened the score at 3-3, but Winthrop managed to capitalize on three Coastal yellow cards and finished the final eight minutes the first half outscoring the Chants 5-2.

Winthrop continued to build its lead in the second as Kasmarik and Accomando scored consecutive goals to open the half.

Yednock broke Winthrop’s goal streak with her first of the day that came unassisted at 21:03. Yednock would be Coastal’s only goal-scorer in the second half, notching her second of the game on a free position shot at 6:53 and closing out Coastal’s scoring at 5:09 with her second unassisted tally.

Camille King played a complete game in net for Winthrop, making seven saves, grabbing five ground balls and forcing four turnovers. Platsidakis, who played the first complete game of her career, performed admirably in the Chanticleer net, making five saves and scooping two ground balls.

Wednesday’s quarterfinal game was the first Big South tournament appearance for the Coastal women’s lacrosse program.
