Lady Chants settle for split in Florida State tournament

The Coastal Carolina softball team opened up the second day of the Florida State Tournament, on Saturday with a 3-0 win against Florida A&M and a 6-1 loss to Florida State to move to 5-3 on the season.

The Chanticleers got on the board in the second inning when Chelsea Pineda hit her first home run of the season to center field to put the score at 1-0. Coastal then earned two more runs when Jessie Winans doubled to left center field to score Sara Rasley and Kory Hayden to put the Chanticleers ahead 3-0.

Coastal’s defense played well during the game allowing only two hits, which came in the third inning and in the seventh.

Kiana Quolas earned the win on the mound for the Chanticleers after pitching a complete game, allowing two hits, two walks and striking out seven in 27 batters faced.

Ashley Minter earned the loss for Florida A&M after pitching 2.1 innings allowing two hits, three walks, while striking out three in 12 batters faced.

Winans finished the game with a hit, two RBI and she was walked once in two at bats. Pineda posted one hit and one RBI in three at bats.

In the Chanticleers game against Florida State both teams were held scoreless in the first inning. The Seminoles got on the board following a ground out by Courtney Senas that advanced Briana Hamilton home to make it a 1-0 game in the second inning.

Coastal’s offense picked up in the top of the fourth as Brooke Donovan was walked and Sarah Maples earned a single on a bunt, but then the next three batters grounded out.

Florida State made it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the fourth and would build up a 6-0 lead in the fifth. Florida State scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Hamilton crossed home on a line out by Bullock.

Hayden collected her fourth home run of the season in the top of the seventh to make it a 6-1 game, but the Chanticleers were unable to score again in the inning.

Morgan Mastriania picked up the loss on the mound for Coastal. Mastriania pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, three walks, while striking out one.

Lacey Waldrop earned the win for the Seminole following five innings pitched giving up hits, walking two, as well as striking out two in 17 batters faced.

The Chanticleers will return to action when they play North Dakota State for the second time in the Florida State Tournament on Sunday.
