Lady Chants sew up second place with Senior Day win

The Coastal Carolina softball team finished the regular season as the Big South Conference regular season runner-up after sweeping Winthrop this weekend winning the final game 7-1 on Sunday.

The Chanticleers finished the regular season with a 38-17 overall record, while going 13-8 in the league.

Prior to the start of the game, Sarah Maples, Chelsea Pineda and Stacy Snellings were honored for their accomplishments and contributions while at Coastal.

Dee Dee Kish and Jess Dannelly also threw out the first pitch, as Coastal was playing its final game in the Coastal Carolina University softball field before the stadium undergoes a renovation.

Pineda put the Chanticleers on the board in the second inning as she hit a double to left center field that scored Nicole Saggiomo.

The Chanticleers extended their lead in the fourth inning when Snellings hit a single to center field, which allowed Saggiomo to advance home to make it a 2-0 game. During Coastal’s next at bat, Jessie Winans hit her second triple of the season that helped the Chanticleers go ahead 4-0, as Snellings and Jazmin Daigle crossed home plate. Winans picked up the final run of the inning on a single up the right side by Maples.

Winthrop cut into the Chants lead in the fifth inning when Kathryn Eberlin knocked the ball out of the park to put the score at 5-1.

Coastal gave up just three hits during the final two innings of play, while they scored two additional runs in the sixth inning. Kory Hayden hit a single that deflected off of the third baseman’s glove and went into right field, which allowed Tamara Hawkins and Maples to score.

Maples posted four hits in four at bats, along with one run and one RBI. Pineda recorded one hit and one RBI in two at bats, along with a team high nine putouts. Snellings had two hits, one run and one RBI in three at bats. Winans finished the game with one hit, one run and two RBI in three at bats, as well as a team high four assists. Hayden ended the game with two hits and two RBI in four at bats.

Kiana Quolas pitched a complete game for Coastal striking out nine, walking one and allowing seven hits in 29 batters faced.

Natalie Becker earned the loss from the circle following 3.1 innings pitched, striking out one, walking three and giving up five hits in 18 batters faced.

“I was real proud how we showed up this weekend, its tough to sweep any team in this conference,” said head coach Kelley Green. “I was pleased with how we shut this field down with all of the renovations that will be taking place. Hopefully we can take the confidence that we had this weekend into the conference tournament next week and fulfill our biggest goal of the season.”

“It was a great weekend for our seniors. All three of our seniors stepped it up big time today. The seniors remained relaxed even with the excitement of the day, as Maples went 4-for-4, Chelsea picked up an RBI early in the game and Stacy got a couple of hits.”

The Chanticleers will return to action on Thursday  in the Big South Conference tournament in Radford , Va. as the #2 seed. Coastal plays at 11:30 a.m. against Presbyterian.
