Lady Chants shut out CSU to reach Big South semis

ccuwsoc-18For the second year in a row, the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team advances to the Big South Tournament Semifinal game after they notched a 5-0 win over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers Sunday afternoon.

Four different Chanticleers accounted for the goals, featuring two from Amber Adams while Sam Patterson, Kayla Christian and Daniella Famili each tallied one.

Second seeded Coastal will take on the winner of the Campbell-Asheville game in a 7 p.m. match on Friday Nov. 6 at Bryan Park in Greensboro. The Chants bested its previous 11-win season, improving their record to 12-6-1.

As it did in the teams’ regular season matchup, Coastal dominated play against Charleston Southern, but this time found the back of the net five times. Adams scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season with the first coming in the 10th minute and the second in just 40 seconds into the second half.

The Chanticleers wasted no time taking the lead in the 10th minute with a goal from Adams. The ball came lose after a cross and Adams gained control of it, taking on three defenders to go 1v1 with the Buccaneers goalkeeper. Adams poked it past her for the lead.

Freshman of the Year, Kayla Christian put the Chants up 2-0 in the 30th minute scoring her ninth goal of the season. Christian received a cross from Adams who passed it in to the opposite post to score. At the start of the second half, the two combined again for goal number three. Adams received a cross this time from Christian to volley it in.

Several minutes later, Coastal used several passes in the final third to get off two shot attempts before Patterson finishes off a low shot to the far left corner. This was Patterson’s fourth goal of the season.

Charleston Southern only threated the Chants three times while having nine shot attempts. Coastal ended the night edging Charleston Southern in shots 19-9 recoding 10 shots on goal. Christian and Adams each racked up four shots while putting at least two on goal.

Coastal is still undefeated at home going 8-0 on the season, and only recording one loss to a conference foe at the CCU Soccer Stadium in the last four years.

With the win, Coastal will face the winner of the #3 seed Campbell or #6 seed UNC Asheville in the semifinals.
