Lady Chants shutout Camels for fourth consecutive win

Freshman Fia Jonsson tallied a goal and an assist and junior Cisca Okoko scored the decisive goal as the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team notched its fourth straight victory with a 2-0 decision over Campbell Thursday night at the CCU Soccer Field.

The Chanticleers have won six of their last seven overall and are on their longest streak of consecutive wins since their Big South regular-season championship season of 2008. The Chants maintained their fourth-place position in the conference at 6-3-0 and are now 9-7-0 overall. Campbell dropped to 9-6-1 overall and 4-5 in the Big South.

Okoko scored for the second straight game and recorded her first career-game winner, finding the back of the net in the 19th minute. Jonsson dished out her team-leading fifth assist on that goal and then scored herself in the 53rd minute for her third tally in the last two contests.

Coastal’s defense limited Campbell to just two shots on goal and Megan Spencer made two saves, including a key one early in the game, en route to her fifth solo shutout of the season.

“It was another very good team win,” head coach Paul Hogan said. “Different players came in and did an awesome job. It was good to see Cisca get on the board again. I thought our defense was outstanding and really limited a very good attacking group. Overall, our effort was great everywhere.”

In an evenly-played first half, the Chants were able to take advantage of their best scoring opportunity, while the Fighting Camels were turned away. Five minutes in, Campbell leading scorer Ashley Clark got loose on breakaway up the left side but a diving Spencer was able to get a hand on the shot from the corner of the box and deflect it away.

Coastal then used a counter-attack from its defensive half to set up the first goal. Sophomore Maddie Phillips took a pass from freshman defender Megan Wagner and carried the ball up the right side before sending a pass ahead to Jonsson. Jonsson then one-touched the ball to Okoko at the top of the 18-yard box. Okoko made a move away from her defender and ripped a left-footed shot inside the near post.

Jonsson then made it 2-0 on the Chants’ first shot of the second half on an assist by junior Christina Stern. Stern got the ball in the middle and sent a pass to the left side of the box for an open Jonsson, who easily beat the Campbell goalkeeper with a shot to the far corner.

Despite the two-goal lead, the Chanticleers kept the pressure on, recording five shots in the span of less than three minutes, including attempts on goal by Okoko and senior Ashley Day.

Coastal outshot Campbell 8-4 in the second half to finish with a 12-8 advantage for the game. The Chants put five attempts on goal and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Chanticleers will host first-place High Point for their final regular-season home game on Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is set for noon, following Senior Day festivities at the CCU Soccer Field.
