Lady Chants stay alive with 3-2 victory over Campbell

Coastal was able to fend off Campbell to take game nine of the 2012 Big South Softball Championship by a 3-2 score on Friday afternoon at Radford Softball Field in Radford , Va.

Coastal earned its 40th win of the season as they improved to 40-18 on the year, while Campbell ends its season at 30-29.

Kiana Quolas helped give Coastal the 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first by hitting a single to the right side to score Brooke Donovan, who reached base on a double to left field for the Chanticleers first hit of the game.

Campbell struck back in the top of the third inning when Stephanie Jones hit a single up the middle that scored Jessi Lane to tie the score at 1-1. Ericka Nesbitt advanced to third on the play by Jones, but she was unable to advance home, as the Chanticleer defense picked up the final two outs of the inning during the Fighting Camels next two at bats.

During the fourth inning the Chanticleers regained the lead when Nicole Saggiomo crossed home plate on Sara Rasley’s sacrifice fly. Jessie Winans loaded the bases during the next at bat after she was walked, but Campbell picked up the final out of the inning on a pop up by Sarah Maples.

The Fighting Camels tied the game up 2-2 in the fifth inning. Jones hit a single up the middle that scored Jessi Lane and moved Ericka Nesbitt to third with one out. Coastal walked the next batter before getting the following two batters out.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh the score remained tied at 2-2. Cacia Pierre kept Coastal in the tournament, as she hit a single up the middle with two outs to score Courtney Howell, who was pinch running for Quolas after she hit a double to right field, to give Coastal the 3-2 victory.

Quolas ended the game with three hits and one RBI in four at bats. Pierre had two hits and one RBI in four at bats. Donovan posted one hit and one run in three at bats and was walked once. Chelsea Pineda recorded 11 putouts in the win. Winans had one hit in one at bats and was walked two times, while recording two assists. Ashley Bagwell also had two assists on the afternoon.

Bagwell posted her 13th win of the season from the circle after pitching seven inning, striking out 11, tying her season high. She didn’t allow a walk and gave up eight hits in 30 batters faced.

Jones finished the game with three hits and two RBI in four at bats, along with four putouts. Nesbitt had on hit and a run in three at bats. Taylor McGee also posted four putouts. Raven Lee and Kailey Farmer both finished with one hit in three at bats.

Christina Melton took the loss from the rubber for the Fighting Camels after pitching 6.2 innings, striking out four, walking four and allowing seven hits in 32 batters faced.

The Chanticleers play host and No. 1 seed Radford on Saturday, May 12 at noon in the third round of the double-elimination tournament.
