Lady Chants’ strong season comes to end at Winthrop

The fifth-seeded Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team fell to No. 4 Winthrop 3-0 in a quarterfinal game of the Big South Championship, presented by Musco Sports Lighting, Saturday night at Eagle Field.

The defeat ended a strong turnaround season for the Chanticleers, who finished with a 10-9-0 record. Winthrop improved to 11-6-2 and advanced to face top-seeded High Point in the semifinals.

Midfielder Grace Radler scored two goals and dished out one assist to lead the Eagles. Radler scored both of her goals in the first half and midfielder Ariel Kunde added the final goal in the 77th minute.

Coastal recorded the first four shots of the game, but Eagles’ goalkeeper Amelia Henderson made three saves in the first 23 minutes to keep the Chanticleers off the scoreboard. Freshman midfielder Fia Jonsson had the first two opportunities, putting a shot from the top of the box just over the crossbar before forcing a save on an attempt from 20 yards out that deflected off a Winthrop defender. Henderson then stopped a 30-yard shot by freshman defender Megan Wagner and a low 20-yard attempt by sophomore forward Kacey Kelley.

The Eagles then finally got their first shot in the 26th minute and capitalized. Radler sent a free kick into the box, where the ball bounced around in a crowd and slipped into the net.

The Chants tried to answer less than three minutes later as junior forward Christina Stern attempted to head a corner kick by Jonsson backward toward the goal, but the ball went wide to the right.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Spencer made a strong save on Winthrop leading scorer Krystyna Freda in the 42nd minute, making a kick stop on Freda’s attempt on a breakaway. However, the Eagles were able to score off the ensuing corner kick as Freda sent the ball to the six-yard box right in front and Radler headed it home for her seventh goal of the season.

Coastal took three shots in the first 12 minutes of the second half, but was unable to get them on net and then Winthrop’s defense then clamped down, holding the Chants without another shot the rest of the way.
