Lady Chants suffer second straight loss on the road

ccuwsoc-17For the second straight game, the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on the road, falling at Radford in an afternoon matchup on Wednesday.

The Chanticleers are now 8-7-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the Big South heading into Friday night’s Senior Night showdown against first-place Liberty.

Radford tallied the game’s lone goal in the 39th minute and improved to 7-8-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the conference.

As it did against UNC Asheville on Saturday, Coastal outshot its opponent but was unable to find the back of the net. The Chants totaled 16 shots, compared to just five for the Highlanders, and had a 5-3 edge in attempts on goal.

Coastal controlled play in the game’s opening minutes, recording the first four shots capped by Sam Patterson’s attempt on net that was stopped in the eighth minute. Neither team could generate a sustained attack for the rest of the first half, but the Highlanders capitalized on a set piece, as senior defender Caitlin Annear headed home a free kick by Jordan Lundin for her second goal of the season.

The Chanticleers held Radford without a shot on goal in the second half and recorded nine shots themselves, including five in the last 10 minutes. However, two of them were blocked, two went wide and Radford keeper Sydney Chervenic saved an attempt by Brianna Panico in the 85th minute.

Chervenic finished the game with five stops, while Becca Austin played all 90 minutes in the CCU net and recorded two saves. Amber Adams, Camille Christie and Kacey Kelley each had a game-high three shots for Coastal.

Preseason favorite Liberty (11-3-1, 7-0-1) rallied to beat Winthrop on Wednesday to extend its unbeaten streak to 10 games. However, The Chants have knocked off each of the eventual regular-season champions the last two seasons and are 14-1 in their last 15 conference home games.

Prior to the contest, which kicks off at 6 p.m., CCU will honor the five members of its 2014 senior class – Shelby Evans, Rylie Johnson, Kacey Kelley, Maddie Phillips and Christina Stern
