Lady Chants take third place at Palmetto Intercollegiate

The Coastal Carolina women’s golf team completed its fall 2012 schedule with a third-place finish at the College of Charleston-hosted Palmetto Intercollegiate held at the Oak Point Golf Club.

Campbell won the tournament with a three round total of 866 (+2). East Tennessee State (887) claimed second followed by the Chanticleers (891). Michigan, Elon and Maryland tied for fourth with score of 894.

After the tournament was postponed due to darkness on Sunday, the Chants played out the final five holes of their second round on Monday, posting a 302 to sit fourth overall after 36 holes. Coastal continued to play well throughout the remainder of the day, shaving five strokes off its round two total, to card a team score of 297 over the final round. With a three round score of 891 (+27) the Chants secured their fourth consecutive top five finish of the fall season.

Freshman Marissa Hinchman finished ninth overall to pace the Chants for the first time in her young career. Hinchman was the model of consistency over her final 36 holes, posting identical scores of 74 en route to her three-round tally of 220 (+4). Hinchman turned in 10 birdies through her 54 holes of play, while carding 34 pars.

Jessica Alexander placed 14th in the 95-competitor field, marking her third top 20 finish of the season. The senior bookended her second round 77 with even-par rounds of 72 to tally a score of 221 (+5). After posting a double-bogey on the par-5, 423-yard fourth hole on her second round, Alexander carded an eagle on the hole to start her third round.  In all, Alexander played 45 holes at par or better.

Senior Brittany Henderson and freshman Lena Schaeffner tied for 39th overall with 54-hole scores of 228 (+12). The duo each shot a round of 74 and a pair of rounds at 77. Henderson fired 77 on her opening two rounds before carding a 74 over her final 18 holes. Schaeffner’s (77-74-77) 228 equaled her season-best 54-hole tournament score.

Senior Eugenia Guerra (71-79-82) rounded out the Chanticleer contingent with a 232 to tie for 57th overall. Guerra carded Coastal’s low round of the tournament with her first round tally of 71.

Campbell’s Maria Jose Benavides claimed the individual title with a 3-under score of 213.

Coastal returns to the links at the Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla., for the UCF Invitational on Feb. 10-12.
