Lady Chants see winning streak snapped by VCU

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team had its winning streak snapped with a 2-1 overtime loss to VCU Sunday afternoon in the College of Charleston Cup at Patriots Point.

It was the first loss in five games for the Chanticleers (3-2-1), while VCU improved to 2-4.

The Rams tallied the game-winner in the ninth minute of the first overtime period when a corner kick by Tayrn Cressy went directly into the goal.

Fia Jonsson scored her second goal in as many games for Coastal. She found the net in the 59th minute to tie the game less than two minutes after VCU had taken the lead. Jonsson made a run up the left side and slid a shot in across the goal mouth for the eighth tally of her career.

From there, VCU outshot the Chants 7-3 through the rest of regulation, though only one attempt went on goal. Three of the shots came in the last five minutes, coupled with two corner kick opportunities.

VCU continued the pressure early in the first overtime, generating three more shots in the first four minutes, but Coastal goalkeeper Megan Spencer stopped the first, another was blocked and a header off a corner went high. However, the Rams forced another corner five minutes later and Cressy converted.

VCU, which has suffered three losses to ranked teams and fell to College of Charleston on Friday, came out attacking to start the game, recording four shots in the first 12 minutes. However, Spencer made two saves while another Rams’ attempt hit the crossbar.

The Chanticleers followed with their first two shots as Jonsson and Ellie Taylor forced stops by VCU keeper Emma Kruse. Play then became more defensive as the teams went 20 minutes of play without a shot before Coastal’s Camille Christie put a header on net.

VCU then had a shot hit off the post in the 44th minute before getting on the board in the 57th minute on an unassisted goal by Maren Johansen. It was the first goal allowed by the Chanticleers since their season opener, spanning 474 minutes of play.

The Rams finished the game with 25-7 advantage in shots, but just an 8-5 edge in attempts on goal. They also totaled 10 corner kicks, while the Chants were held without one. Spencer finished with six saves in the loss.

Coastal returns to the CCU Soccer Field for its just second home game of the season on Friday, Sept. 13, as it hosts UAB.
