Lady Chants work more OT magic to top Lady Bulldogs

ccuwsoc-30throwThe Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team slides past Gardner-Webb with a 1-0 overtime win. For the third time this season, the Chants came away with a victory during an overtime

The Chanticleers improved to a 7-4-0 overall record and is now 3-0-0 in the Big South. This loss dropped Gardner-Webb to 0-3 in the Big South and 3-7-2 overall.

Despite the hurricane weather, the Chants and the Bulldogs battled it out on the turf at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach.

Gardner-Webb’s offense started things off with two close scoring opportunities in the beginning of the half, forcing goalkeeper Becca Austin to make the saves.

The Chants answered the Bulldogs offensive play with driven shot from Amber Adams after beating three defenders but swept up by Bulldog keeper, Keely Brown.

Coastal ended the first half with a 6-4 edge over Gardner-Webb. Becca Austin recorded four saves to Gardner-Webb’s three.

As the second half started, the rain continued to pour down causing an even more slippery playing surface for the two teams.

With under 20 minutes of play left, Adams received the ball on the 6-yard box to tap it in but was blocked off the line by a Bulldog defender.

Just 10 minutes later, Gardner-Webb had scored off a cross but was called back because of an off-sides call.

For the third time this season, regulation time wasn’t enough for the Chanticleers forcing an overtime. It only took the Chants two minutes to put one of the board to earn the victory.

A cross from Tara Lyons was sent into the mix where Sophomore Danielle Famili was posted up. Famili was able to poke it in past Brown for the win. This was Famili’s fifth of the season and seventh of her career.

The Chanticleers will return to action next Wednesday Oct. 7 as they travel to High Point. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
