Lady Chiefs scratch 7-year itch by beating Myrtle Beach

The North Myrtle Beach Lady Chiefs closed the regular season with an impressive 59-46 victory over visiting Myrtle Beach on Thursday night, their first victory over their rivals since the 2004-05 season.

“It was a big night, our seniors’ last home game and they really rose to the occasion,” said North Myrtle Beach coach Jude Hunt. “(Beating Myrtle Beach) is something we’ve been wanting to do for awhile. It’s a nice spark to carry into the playoffs.”

North Myrtle Beach improves to 17-7 overall and 7-3 in Region VIII-AAA, while Myrtle Beach falls to 19-5 overall and 7-3 in the region.

The Lady Seahawks hold the tie-breaker for second place and will host a first-round playoff game next week against Cane Bay, while the Lady Chiefs will have to go on the road for their playoff opener. They travel to Bluffton on Monday.

But that didn’t seem to matter to the Lady Chiefs, who never trailed in the contest and defeated the two-time defending state champion Myrtle Beach’s one-girl show in senior Khadijah Sessions. She scored 35 points in the contest, including 21 of her team’s 23 first half points.

While Sessions scored a game-high total, she needed 29 field goal attempts and 15 attempts from the free throw line to reach her 35-point total as NMB’s defense worked hard to make it a long night for the University of South Carolina signee.

While Myrtle Beach was operating with just one wheel, the Lady Chiefs used a team effort in the win.  Ja’Quella Livingston paced NMB with 13 points, Taylor Allman tallied 12 points and Sharissa Chestnut connected on 10-of-12 from the free throw line for all 10 of her points.  India Farmer worked the boards for the Lady Chiefs as she grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

Myrtle Beach’s Shavae Shaw added eight points and 11 rebounds for Myrtle Beach, while Sessions reached a double-double with 12 boards.
