Lady Chiefs look to go the distance in track and field

The North Myrtle Beach High girls track and field begins defense of its Region VIII-AAA and Horry County titles on Tuesday, and the Lady Chiefs return three state qualifiers in hopes of adding a state title to their list of championships.

Junior Ja’Quella Livingston finished third in the state in the high jump, sophomore Benjamin Jenerette was seventh in the 1600 meters and senior Marisa Maher placed eighth in 400-meter individual medley and and pole vault to give the Lady Chiefs the inside track on going the distance to the state meet this season.

Seniors Chella Brown (200, 400), Briana Taylor (400, 800), Venyka Dewitt (100, long jump, triple jump) and Jasman Vereen (shot, discus) hope to go the distance in their final seasons.

Freshman Ingrid Edge (100 and 200 high hurdles), sophomores Halice Schoonover (100m, 100HH, pole vault, triple jump), Breeanna Goodyear (400, 800), Jarrett McCray (1600, 3200), and juniors Ashley Buck (high jump and triple jump), Jamie Smith (400, 800) look to have strong season for the Lady Chiefs.

North Myrtle Beach also returns several strong contributors. Eighth-graders Drake Jenerette (800m, 1600m, 3200m) and Alexis Leonhardt (high jump, triple jump and long jump) look to boost North Myrtle Beach’s depth in distance running and field events.

Newcomers to the squad include senior Audrey Grey (discus, shot, triple and long jump, 400m), junior Alex Tanck an exchange student from Germany (1600, 3200) and Rachael Houston (1600, 3200), sophomore Tori Prough (high jump, long jump, triple jump), freshman Madison Knight (100HH, 400, pole vault), eighth graders Joslyn McCray (400IH, 800, pole vault), Savanah Gill (100HH, 400, pole vault), Annika Crosswhite (high jump, 100HH) and Victoria Suchy (200, 400, 800).

The starter’s gun fire today with a tri-meet with Socastee and West Brunswick, but the Lady Chiefs have their sights set on bigger dates down the road – the April 21 Horry County Championships, the April 24-25 Region championship meet and most of all, the May 11-12 State Championships.
