Girls Hoops: MB, NMB, CF battle for key region wins

The North Myrtle Beach girls basketball team used a strong second half to knock off visiting Wilson 71-56 on Friday night.

The Lady Chiefs (14-2 overall, 2-0 Region 7-3A) tailed by double digits at halftime, 35-25, but matched their offensive output in the third quarter alone, 25-6, to take the lead for good and run away with the region contest.

Senior Taylor Allman scored a game-high 21 points, putting her past the 1,500-point mark for her career. Teammate India Farmer added 18 and nine for North Myrtle Beach.

Marci Chestnut had a big night with a season-high 15 points and Ja’Quella Livingston added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 points for the Lady Chiefs.

Wilson was led by Maryann Goodson with 16 points.

* Myrtle Beach 34, Socastee 30: The Myrtle Beach girls basketball team used a big fourth-quarter comeback to down rival Socastee on Friday night.

The Lady Braves (10-6 overall, 1-1 region) outscored the Lady Seahawks (10-6, 2-0) in each of the first three quarters, leading 24-17 at that points. Furthermore, Myrtle Beach star Tanisha Brown was held to only three points through the first three frames.

But the senior UNC-Charlotte commitment caught fire in the fourth period, scoring 13 of her team-high 16 points in the final quarter. She finished with her eighth double-double of the season with a game-high 13 rebounds as the Lady Seahawks doubled their offensive output in the fourth quarter, outscoring Socastee 17-6.

While Brown was leading the charge on the offensive end of the floor, Tasha Chestnut was the defensive player of the game, according to Myrtle Beach coach Jennifer Dennison. “(She) was all over the floor with her great defense,” Dennison said. “I tell my girls, ‘Defense wins games and offense sells tickets, and Tasha played great defense tonight.”

Blake Smith and Kira Bell led the Lady Braves with nine points apiece.

* Carolina Forest 49, South Florence 48: The Lady Panthers (4-11, 2-0) remained undefeated in Region 6-4A play with a hard-fought, double-overtime victory over the Lady Bruins.

Senior Marisa Runyon scored a game-high 20 points, including a clutch 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer to force another period. Ashleigh Turner, who scored 14 points, hit the game-winning layup in double OT and Cristina Wright added 12 points.
