Carolinas Challenge: Heels ride hot hands to big win

uncwhoops-24dribbleDestinee Walker scored a season-high 25 points to pace North Carolina to an 87-57 victory over Jacksonville on Tuesday night in the Carolinas Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

North Carolina (9-2) shot a season-best 53.4 percent from the field. Stephanie Watts had 18 points, and both Jamie Cherry and Hillary Fuller each tossed in 10.

Sherranda Reddick had 18 points to lead Jacksonville (9-3).

Limited to a season-low two points on Sunday in the loss to LSU, Walker asserted herself nicely with five points in the first quarter. Her layup put Carolina ahead by six, 11-5 midway through the quarter.

Jacksonville closed within four, but Carolina scored the final six points of the opening stanza to lead 17-7.

Carolina extended its cushion in the second quarter by way of the three-point shot. After missing her first two attempts from distance, Watts pulled up on the fast break and found the bottom of the net to give her nine points in the opening half.

Walker was even better in the second quarter. Her second triple of the period gave UNC a commanding 32-15 lead. Later, she converted a reverse layup from an awkward angle, giving her 15 points in the half, and Carolina a 42-20 halftime lead.

Walker and Watts combined for 15 of Carolina’s 22 points in the third quarter as the Tar Heels continued to pull away from the Dolphins.

Freshman Naomi Van Nes scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter, helping the lead swell to as many as 39 points for the Tar Heels.
