Tennis: MB tops Socastee; Lady Panthers nip Conway

The Myrtle Beach High girls tennis team celebrated its seventh consecutive Region 7-4A title one day early Wednesday by defeating non-region rival Socastee on Wednesday.

Having mathematically locked up the region title entering Thursday’s Senior Night regular season finale against North Myrtle Beach, the Lady Seahawks (10-0 overall, 5-0 region) were able to focus on the task at hand and take care of the Lady Braves by a 5-1 score.

All eyes were on the No. 1 singles showdown between Myrtle Beach’s Bailey Deskins and Socastee’s Anna Brice Cox, who was playing in her final regular season match after six seasons as the Lady Braves’ top players. Deskins claimed a 7-6, 6-4 victory in the matchup of two of the state’s top junior players.

But the match of the day was taking place on the next court in No. 2 singles. Myrtle Beach’s Paxton Gentry battled to a hard-fought 7-9, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Socastee’s Brooke Rogers.

Myrtle Beach’s No. 3 Carrington Callihan defeated Joy Renfrow 6-3, 6-1, Socastee’s No. 4 Nicole Mortel downed Janell Horton 6-2, 6-2, and Myrtle Beach’s No. 5 Jalah Horton beat Kristen Peters 6-2, 6-0. Myrtle Beach’s No. 2 doubles team of Dea Skendari led Socastee’s Hannah Bean and Kyndal Hodge 4-3 before the match was retired.

Both teams start the playoffs at home next week against opponents to be determined – Socastee on Wednesday and Myrtle Beach on Thursday.
