Seahawks silence Sharks, make noise in region races

The Myrtle Beach High girls basketball team sent St. James a reminder Friday night that they are still the team to beat in Region VIII-AAA.

The Lady Seahawks (18-4 overall, 6-2 region) scored a 48-45 victory over the Lady Sharks (18-4, 7-1), who suffered their first loss of the season in region play.

Myrtle Beach senior standout Khadijah Sessions scored a game-high 30 points and hit her free throws down the stretch to beat St. James in the Shark Tank.

The Lady Seahawks, who have won the past six region titles and the last two Class AAA state championships, avenged an earlier loss to St. James last month.

Stephanie Roberts led the Lady Sharks with 19 points and Monica Smalls added 13. St. James still holds a one-game lead over Myrtle Beach in the region standings with just two games remaining in the regular season.

St. James travels to Wilson on Tuesday night while the Lady Seahawks host Georgetown, which is winless in the region.

* Boys: The Seahawks dominated the Sharks from start to finish Friday night, scoring a 59-43 victory at the Shark Tank and putting the Region VIII-AAA championship up for grabs.

The Seahawks (11-11, 5-3 region) dealt the Sharks (11-8, 6-2) their second region loss and dropped them into a first-place tie with Wilson, which defeated Socastee 53-43 on Friday.

The Seahawks, who now stand one loss out of first place with two games remaining in the regular season, assured themselves a playoff spot with the win.

Myrtle Beach avenged an earlier loss this season to St. James, showing the vast improvement the Seahawks have made over the past three weeks. After an 0-2 start in the region, they have won five of their last six.

Emaray Johnson scored a team-high 12 points, E.J. Goings added 11 and Nolan Butler chipped in 10 in a balanced scoring attack for the Seahawks. They play host to Georgetown on Tuesday.

Caleb Duggan registered a game-high 17 points for St. James but no other Sharks scored in double-figures. They travel to Wilson on Tuesday for a showdown for sole possession of first place in the region.
