Seahawks stay undefeated in opening round of CBHI

mbghoops-21Day One of the 2016 Crescom Bank Holiday Invitational ended with hometown Myrtle Beach scoring a 58-40 victory over previously undefeated Hillside (Hamilton, GA).  The victory moved the Seahawks (7-0) into the quarterfinal round where they will face Lake Highland (FL), a 61-46 winner over Harris County (GA).  Norcross (GA) and Monacan (VA) recorded victories in the first two games of the tourney and will meet in another quarterfinal contest.

Norcross (12-0) defeated Orangeburg-Wilkinson (5-3; Orangeburg, SC) 65-24 to open the 2016 CBHI.  The Lady Blues scored early and often, leading by as many as 24 in the first half and building leads as large as 42 points in the final half.  13 of 14 players that played for Norcross scored, led by Taylor Mason’s 11 points.  Asia Hampton paced Orangeburg-Wilkinson with seven points.

In the second game of the opening day, Monacan (5-0; Chesterfield County, VA) scored an easy 78-27 win over Prairie View (3-4; Henderson, CO).  Monacan was led by University of Connecticut signee Megan Walker’s 19 points and eight rebounds in just 13 minutes of action.  Mack Maier led Prairie View with 16 points but committed 11 turnovers as the Thunderhawks were forced into a total of 27 turnovers in the game.

Lake Highland Prep (7-2; Orlando, FL) trailed early in the first half but took the lead at 14-12 on a pair of Jiselle Havas free throws with 9:52 remaining in the opening half.  The Highlander went on to lead by as many as 17 points down the stretch to cruise to the victory.  Tyra Cox led all scorers with 30 points and swiped 11 steals to tie for the second best single game total in CBHI history.  Cox tied Wesleyan’s (GA) Jordan Frazier with 11 and fell just one short of the record 12 steals by Megan Withrow (Nitro, WV).  Harris County (9-1; Hamilton, GA) was led by Jessika Carter’s 17 points, 1 rebounds and eight blocks.

The finale of day one saw Myrtle Beach (7-0) trail for less than one minute of the contest as the Seahawks used a stifling defense to force Hillside (8-1) into 17 turnovers and just a 26.5 shooting percentage for the game.  Nia Sumpter, who connected on 7-of-8 shots from the field, led Myrtle Beach with 17 points, eight rebounds and five steals.  Kiana Adderton added 16 points and eight boards for the Seahawks while Elisia Grissett led all scorers with 27 points and 14 rebounds for Hillside.  Grissett, who has committed to the University of South Carolina, was 9-of-20 from the field while drawing plenty of attention from the Myrtle Beach defense.

The Crescom Bank Holiday Invitational will take Sunday off before returning at 12:00 p.m. on Monday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
