Lady Seahawks sweep past Wilson to garner region title

The Myrtle Beach High girls tennis team captured the Region 7-3A championship on Wednesday by shutting out Wilson 6-0 in a win-or-go-home showdown in Florence.

The Lady Seahawks (13-3 overall, 4-1 region) got on the bus needing to win at least five matches to clinch the No. 1 seed in the region or miss out on the postseason, a rare occurance for the state powerhouse.

Instead, the Lady Seahawks won them all, forgoing No. 1 doubles after the region title was secure. The win forced a three-way tie atop the region standings, with Myrtle Beach winning the total matches won tiebreaker.

Earlier this season, Socastee defeated Myrtle Beach 4-3 but lost to Wilson by the same score. Myrtle Beach’s 6-0 win on Wednesday gives Myrtle Beach nine total matches, Socastee seven and Wilson four. Socastee will serve as the No. 2 seed in the region and Wilson will not make the postseason.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our girls,” said Myrtle Beach coach Jerri Himmelsbach. “They knew what we had to do and they all played their hearts out. We’re peaking at the right time.”

Myrtle Beach’s No. 1 singles Jessie Dumas set the tone early, knocking off an opponent she has faced unsuccessfully in the past. She defeated Whitney Timmons 7-6 in the first set, then swept her 6-0 in the second set.

No. 2 Rachel Berkey downed Anjali Om 6-1, 6-1, No. 3 Emma Springs beat Maggie Meggs 6-1, 6-2, No. 4 Carolyn Gore defeated Mallorie Gainey 6-3, 6-0, and No. 5 Elisabeth Spielvogel ousted Micita Jones 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 2 doubles team of Catherine Truluck and Katharine Woodard made it a clean sweep by defeating Sajana Ceeraka and Meghan Grand 6-3, 6-4, and No. 1 doubles became irrelevant in light of the Lady Seahawks’ domination.

Myrtle Beach will host the No. 2 seed from Region 6-3A in the playoffs next Thursday while Socastee will travel to the top seed from the same region.
