Sharks, Seahawks swap shutouts on soccer pitch

After a hard-fought first half that ended in a scoreless draw, St. James girls soccer coach Curtis Freeman had some stern words for his Lady Sharks.

“I told them at halftime that Myrtle Beach was playing with more passion than they were, and I think that touched a nerve,” Freeman said. “I said, ‘We need to go out and score a goal now,’ and they responded.”

Just seconds after the intermission, St. James’ Sarah Breeden broke free and punched a shot into the back of the net, and the Lady Sharks (10-3-1 overall, 4-0 region) were back to themselves.

They wound up rolling to a 3-0 shutout of the Lady Seahawks (4-5, 1-1), with Breeden scoring a pair of goals and dishing out an assist to Jessi Campos to cap the scoring in Tuesday’s key Region VIII-AAA match at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

But it didn’t come easily as Myrtle Beach dominated the tempo and possession in the first half. Only the handy work of St. James sophomore goalkeeper Rhylee DeCrane kept it a scoreless game in the opening 40 minutes.

“Myrtle Beach has a really good team and they were taking it to us in the first half,” Freeman said. “We knew we were in for a tough match. Fortunately our girls responded in the second.”

Breeden’s first goal came before many fans had even returned to their seats, but those who missed it didn’t have to wait long to see her score the prettiest goal of the game at the 53-minute mark.

Breeden took a pass from sister Jenny Breeden in the right corner, beat her defender to the baseline and bent a shot over the Myrtle Beach goalkeeper’s outstretch arms and into the far top corner of the net.

At the 64-minute mark, Sarah Breeden passed up the chance for a hat trick by assisting to Campos, who drilled a hard shot into the back of the net to end the Lady Sharks’ outburst.

St. James returns to action next Wednesday for a home match against visiting St. Stephens.

Boys

* Myrtle Beach 4, St. James 0: Aristen Baku scored a pair of goals and dished out an assist to lead the Seahawks (10-2-1 overall, 2-0 region) to a shutout over the Region VIII-AAA rival Sharks (4-7, 2-2).

The Seahawks dominated the match from the start, with Mason Lewis taking a pass from Baku and banging it off the cross bar for a goal in the opening minute.

Just 13 minutes later Lewis made an excellent cross to set up a goal for Max Huggins to make it a 2-0 score and the Seahawks didn’t let up in the second half.
