Soccer Playoffs: St. James, Myrtle Beach win openers

You know expectations are high when your coach isn’t completely pleased with a blowout win in the first round of the playoffs.

Such is the case for the St. James girls soccer squad, which scored a 6-0 victory over visiting Cane Bay in Monday’s opening round of the Class AAA state playoffs.

What would normally be a cause for celebration for most squads was business as usual for the Lady Sharks, and only about half of what is expected from St. James coach Curtis Freeman.

“We got up 2-0 in the first half and we stopped playing hard,” Freeman said. “The girls still got some shots (on goal), but I told them at halftime about the importance of playing quality soccer, and they played well in the second half.”

One-sided shutouts have become par for course for the Lady Sharks, as have hat tricks by sophomore Jenny Breeden. She delivered three goals again on Monday and added two assists to lead top-seeded St. James past the No. 4 Lady Cobras.

Teammate Jessi Campos scored a pair of goals and also dished out two assists. Tiffany Marsh scored one goal and Nicole Meyers and Matney Carriker each provided an assist. Goalkeeper Rhylee DeCrane made one save in the game.

The Lady Sharks advance to host AC Flora in the second round on Wednesday.

* Myrtle Beach 2, Berkeley 1: The Lady Seahawks advanced to the second round of the Class AAA Lower State tournament with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Lady Stags on Monday.

Despite the close margin of victory, Myrtle Beach dominated possession against Berkeley but missed several scoring opportunities.

Myrtle Beach’s Hunter Dixon ended the frustration by converting an assist from Mary Betth Hervig and Bailey Richard scored the Lady Seahawks’ game-winning goal off an assist from Tori Zeltner. Goalkeeper Jessica DeForge made a pair of saves.

Myrtle Beach travels to face Brookland-Cayce on Wednesday.

* West Ashley 2, Carolina Forest 1: The Lady Panthers’ season came to an end in the first round of the Class AAAA Lower State tournament on Monday with a 2-1 defeat to the Lady Wildcats.

* Hilton Head Island 10, Socastee 0: The Lady Braves’ season ended in a difficult defeat, getting shutout and blown out by the Lady Seahawks in the opening round of the Class AAA Lower State tournament.
