Lefty’s old roomie in MB to play for PGA national title

golf-weirPhil Mickelson isn’t among the more than 300 PGA pros on Grand Strand to play in this week’s 47th PGA Professional National Championship, but his old college roommate is.

Ben Weir of Mesa, Arizona was a two-year roommate and teammate (1990, ‘91) of Phil Mickelson at Arizona State. He is among the PGA pros competing for the national championship, which begins Sunday at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club and Grande Dunes Resort in Myrtle Beach.

While Mickelson was in nearby Pinehurst (NC) last week for the US Open, Weir, the PGA director of instruction at Red Mountain Ranch Country Club in Mesa, Arizona, is making his first appearance in the PGA Professional National Championship after earning the spot in improbable fashion last September at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa. He birdied six of his final eight holes, including two in extra holes, to win a three-way playoff for the Southwest PGA Section Championship.

Weir has competed on multiple worldwide tours in his career: Asian Tour, OMEGA Tour (2 years), Canadian PGA Tour (3 years), FNB South African Sunshine Tour (1 year) and the Grey Goose/Gateway Tour (4 years). He twice cracked the Top 700 in the Official World Golf Rankings, formerly the Sony World Rankings and defeated Kevin Stadler by two strokes in 2004 to win a Grey Goose/Gateway Tour event in Temecula, California.

Weir was also a roommate of Golf Channel’s Jerry Foltz on the Adams Texas Tour and a traveling companion with three-time PGA Professional National Champion Mike Small on the Asian Tour.

Weir will join 311 fellow PGA pros competing for the national title and the winner’s share of the $550,000 purse. The four-day tournament tees off at 8 a.m. Sunday.
